My Heartfelt Thanks: Fr. Gary

The words popped off the page and penetrated my heart! Emotion overtook me at the Groundbreaking Ceremony when I was given the opportunity to turn the earth and chant: “Upon the unshakable rock of your commandments, Christ, make firm your Church.” I was lifted in a cloud of enthusiasm as I pressed the shovel into the ground. “Yes God! Keep me grounded, and help me lead,” I thought, as His Eminence concluded the service. How many priests and communities are given the opportunity to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony? None of this would have been possible without the commitment of all who have offered contributions: donations of time, talent, money, love and support!  read more ..

As we enter a MOST HISTORIC weekend in the life of our PARISH, I think it would is important to share with you some amazing news! I am continually BLOWN away by the significant achievements of our fundraisers.  Please check out the note I received from our GOLF COMMITTEE:

Our 2012 tournament was held on Monday September 10th with a field of 89 players.   We made $30,085 net profit for the Tournament and Building Fund. This a new record for our golf committee eclipsing last years record of $ 23,556. Previous results, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007 were $23,556, $20,822, $21,100, $21,200 and $21,500.  2012 is indeed an amazing breakthrough number and we are thrilled with the result! Our 19th Annual Golf Tournament will be on September 9th 2013 at Sunset Hills Country Club. Thanks again, to our committee, volunteers, players and sponsors!  We couldn't achieve this level of success without your generosity.

St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Christian Church is set to begin construction of their new facility on the corner of Woodcreek and Santa Rosa Roads in Camarillo, CA.  His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco will lead the community in the GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY scheduled for Saturday, September 29 at 4:00 PM.  General site construction will begin in mid-October.  The community of St. Demetrios has hired HMH Contractors to run the project.

The Parish, celebrating its 35th Anniversary, is currently located at the Camarillo Airport near Pleasant Valley Road and is home to approximately 200 families in Ventura County.  Rev. Father Gary Kyriacou was assigned to St. Demetrios on August 1, 2004.  He and the community have been working together, tirelessly, through Capital Campaign projects, Festivals, Golf Tournaments and other fundraisers to build a new facility ever since.

In April 2004 St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Christian Church purchased a beautiful parcel of land in the Mission Oaks area of Camarillo.  Fundraising efforts to pay for the land began immediately.  The land debt was retired in March 2007.  Heathcote and Associates architecture firm immediately began to design the campus of the Byzantine style complex.

Fr. Gary and the faithful of St. Demetrios are celebrating this milestone, and, at the same time, preparing to raise the next several million to erect the new structures.  The church was established in 1977 at the Camarillo Airport.  Since its inception St. Demetrios has become the spiritual home to many desiring a closer relationship with Christ.  Both Greek and non-Greek parishioners make up the diverse group of worshippers.  “You don’t have to be Greek to be an Orthodox Christian,” says Fr. Gary.

St Demetrios is under the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Fransisco, which extends over 7 States. There are 67 parishes under the spiritual guidance of His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco.  The next closest Greek Orthodox Churches in Southern California are St. Barbara’s in Santa Barbara and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Christian Church in Northridge, California.  Services are conducted in English and sprinkled with Greek. The Church celebrates services on Sunday mornings begin at 9:00 AM.  Visitors are welcome.  Call 805-482-1273or visit the parish website www.saintdem.org for further information.
