American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association is an organization that promotes Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic responsibility and individual excellence for Greek Orthodox brothers in Christ.


The AHEPA Family of Ventura County is pleased to announce the nineteenth annual competition for the Lena Simitzi Memorial Scholarship for qualified women and the sixteenth annual competition for the Bill Gatsios Memorial Scholarship for qualified men. A scholarship of $500 for Gatsios and $1,000 for the Simitzi will be awarded in Spring 2024 to qualified residents of Ventura County who will be enrolled in a program of postsecondary education during the 2024-2025 academic year.

AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational and Progressive Association) is the largest non-partisan, non-denominational Greek-American association in the world with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, and Cyprus, and sister chapters in Australia. It was established in 1922 by visionary Greek-Americans to protect Hellenes from prejudice originating from the KKK, and in its history, AHEPA has joined with the NAACP and B'nai B'rith to fight discrimination. The mission of the AHEPA Family is to promote the ideals of Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, family and individual excellence. The AHEPA family consists of four organizations: Order of AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, Sons of Pericles, and Maids of Athena.

The application deadline is May 1, 2024. Recipients will be notified by May 31, 2024.

Applicant requirements are:

  • Residency in Ventura County for at least one year prior to application
  • Academic transcript
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Greek descent or related to a member of the Order of AHEPA or the Daughters of Penelope
  • Full-time student (12 units or more)

Selection of the recipient(s) will be based on the following criteria:

  • Completed application form
  • Essay and personal statement
  • Transcript
  • Instructor recommendations
